Storm Rider 3L All-Weather Shell Jacket - VF Series

Big fan. Snow and rain are no match, and I don’t have any complaints. It’s so breathable for the level of protection it offers.

The water repellency of the Storm Rider shell is excellent - water beads on this jacket as it would on a freshly waxed car. The hood is large and allows the jacket to be fully zipped up without catching my chin or beard in the zipper. Note that the jacket alone provides very little insulation or warmth, which is great of you are in a warm climate. In my area, rain is usually accompanied by colder temperatures. Since the Rocky Loft down jacket is shown with the Storm Rider in some of the pictures, I purchased the Rocky Loft to wear underneath the shell and it really fits perfectly, especially under the hood. These two jackets seems to have been designed to wear in combination, so I’m unclear why Ketl doesn’t offer a package price for these two jackets and market them as a 3-in-1 system.

This jacket is super comfy and is replacing my Marmot rain slicker as well as a bulky winter coat.

Initially, the jacket arrived with a manufacturing defect - one of the pockets wasn’t finished, so my hand went right through it. But I filed a support request, and the Ketl team was super helpful and even offered expedited shipping on the replacement. I love how Ketl stands behind their products overall and how ridiculously comfortable all their clothing is.

This jacket has excellent water resistance and is still breathable despite being very durable. Have taken it rappelling, fishing, crabbing and hiking in various weather conditions. It has taken rock abrasions, been poked by tree branches and weathered sap/pitch exposure. I've happily tested this in the CA backcountry for about a year and it still looks just like the day I bought it. I have no doubt this jacket will last many years to come.

I'll start this review off by saying I've had two other name brand rain shells and both have left me wet and cold at one point or another. This is definitely the most expensive jacket I've ever purchased and the nicest by far. The fit and finish on it is amazing and inspires confidence as soon as you put it on. I'm very much into outdoor hiking and backpacking among other things and this jacket is going to be my new outer shell. I will update this review in a few months as I'll be completing a 5 day 4 night backpacking trip through Colorado, but I did just get back from a week long trip to Iceland and I was really happy to have this jacket. The DWR coating on this is amazing and sheds water like a ceramic coated car! Not to mention for a jacket that's much thicker than my last two shells it breathes better than them somehow thanks to the pit zips and the pockets doubling as added ventilation. I wish these guys made women's clothes so I could get my wife one of these because this is quality craftsmanship and I can't wait to get it back out in the elements again to further test it!

Hi, Ketl mountain guys. Your storm rider jacket is awesome!!! The stitching, the inner taped seams and the zippers all show incredible workmanship. I've had great shells in the past and I believe yours is the best. I was wearing it the day after I received it in a pretty good rain storm and I was completely dry after an hour and a half in the downpour. This shell is the best combination of high durability, light weight and minimalist design that I have seen. I checked out all the major companies looking for the right new shell and I promise you I picked the best one......yours. Thank you, Ketl Mountain guys. Keep up the great work.
PS the venting through the pockets was a great touch.

So far, it’s doing everything well. I’ve alpine skied 7 days in New England, sub-zero and single digits and wind. It layers comfortably and the hood fits right for the chairlift ride. Zippers are easy pulls with mittens. Then 10 days of Alpine skiing in CA, sun, sun and more sun, temps as high as 50. Venting and light weight make all the difference. I would consider a different color but can’t say enough about what I like about the fabric and finish. The seams/construction is first rate.

I'll start out by saying this jacket looks and feels very high quality- top notch. It gives the impression of outstanding value. I like how it is flexible, stretchy, and doesn't sound like a tarp when moving. Gives me confidence to feel I will be protected in the worst of weather and will not be easily damaged by brush or abrasions. Plenty of room to layer and feature rich.

Getting into the concerns- I do wish the front didn't taper so high compared to the back. For a jacket intended to be used in the snow I feel it needs to come down further. I'm tall at 6'4", bought a large, and the front is just barely enough in my opinion. Sleeves and back are plenty long but the front still exposes my midlayers by an inch or so. This does not match with measurements on the website. I have the Escapade jacket from KETL which is listed as being shorter than this one but is actually the same in the back but longer than this one in the front when trying them on together. I expected this one to be longer in both front and back. Lastly, the taped seams need some attention. On one side under one of the arms there were 2 places where the seam tape was coming up which indicates it was not applied with the level of care it needed. I will try to fix but would have sent it back if I didn't have the guarantee from KETL that they'll repair their products for their lifetime.

Very happy with my Storm Rider! I’m 1.93 m tall and weigh 99 kg, and the XXL fits perfectly—even with a fleece or my vest underneath. It’s comfortable, allows plenty of freedom of movement, and works beautifully as an outer shell for skiing.
The only improvement I can think of would be a small forearm pocket for a ski pass. You can keep the pass in the inner pocket alongside your phone, but a dedicated sleeve pocket would make this the perfect jacket.

Very impressed with the Storm Rider 3L and Ketl Mt products as a whole. Great quality, love the fit and mobility, this jacket will be a staple for my travels.

I am very pleased with my recent purchase. The delivery was exceptionally fast, and the quality is outstanding. As a size Large, I find the fit generous enough to layer over a heavy winter jacket for rainy or wet snow days, yet comfortable enough to wear with a simple sweater in the fall. Ketl consistently delivers excellent quality and fit.

This is a really solid hardshell with a great balance of heavy-duty protection and breathability. The hood works for basically anything (helmet or no helmet), which was a huge perk. Best of all, you don't feel like you're wearing a plastic garbage bag when you start moving.

Phenomenal jacket - fit, feel, and functional! It arrived just before a trip and weather blew through. It was the perfect weight, even during the summer… The pit zips regulate temperature and the water sheds right off. Highly recommend and I’d put it up against any big name brand jacket.
